What You Need To Know About Sugar And Your Skin

Sometimes you can be doing all the right things – you’re using the right cleanser, doing the right mask every week, using all the right skin care products, yet still your complexion is looking dull, or you are getting breakouts, and it just doesn’t make sense.

Maybe the culprit is not something topical, but instead is something you are eating.

Today’s post is actually from a guest blogger. Sally Mitchell of Lumeskin.com  very kindly wrote me a post about what eating sugar does to your skin. She has also put in some remedies to help you  do some repair-work. At the end of the post I have put links to some other very interesting posts she has written for her own website, Lumeskin.com

What You Need To Know About Sugar And Your Skin

We all know how bad sugar is for the body and what it does to the waistline, but did you know that sugar is also bad  for the skin?

When you consume sugar, the body breaks down the carbohydrates into glucose. This causes your insulin levels to spike which leads to a burst of inflammation throughout the body.

Inflammation in the body causes the body to produce enzymes that break down collagen and elastin. We need collagen and elastin to keep our skin plumped and prevent sagging. Too much sugar in our diets leads to the body breaking down these enzymes and our skin begins to sag, fine lines and wrinkles begin to form and our skin loses it’s elasticity. The more sugar you consume, the more likely it is that you will develop insulin resistance or diabetes, which can manifest as excess hair growth and dark patches on the neck and body creases.
People who have a high sugar diet will notice that they often suffer with acne like breakouts on their skin that never seems to go away completely even with acne skincare products.

What sugars should you not eat?

Simple carbohydrates are your skin’s worst enemy! Simple carbs break down into glucose and result in insulin spikes in your body.

Some common simple carbohydrates include:

• White bread

• Candy or sweets
• Fried foods
• Ice cream
• Fruit juice
• Pasta
• Condiments
• Ketchup
• Jams and jellies
• White and brown sugar
• Sodas
• Packaged snacks

What sugars should you eat?

Complex carbohydrates are broken down into glucose at a much slower rate. This means that they will not spike your insulin levels and cause inflammation in the body and skin.

• Beans
• Nuts
• Whole grain foods

• High fiber foods
• Olive oil
• Avocados
• Green vegetables
• Berries
• salmon

These food items are filled with anti-oxidants which will help your skin fight off free radicals as well healthy fats which will help your skin hydrated and keep your skin looking plump and youthful.

Tricks to counteract the sugar effects on your skin

Every action in the body has a re-action. There are ways that you can help your body deal with the unwanted sugars which will result in better looking skin.

1. Sleep

Make sure that you are getting enough sleep. When you do not get enough sleep, your body produces a stress hormone called Cortisol. This hormone can cause your insulin levels to spike.

2. Stress

Stress is a silent killer. Try to keep your stress levels as low as possible because stress can cause your insulin levels to spike just as much as sugar can. Find ways to deal with your stress levels such as meditating, doing yoga, or getting exercise.

3. Diet

Eating a balanced diet is one of the most important things that you can do to keep your body and skin looking young and healthy.

Make sure you are eating enough fresh foods as well as drinking at least a liter of water a day. A good water intake will ensure that your body stays hydrated and will help your body eliminate unwanted toxins that affect your body and the appearance of your skin.

4. Fast Food.

Cut back on (or eliminate!) fast food. Fast food can cause your insulin levels to spike because of the way that it is prepared. Frying food such as starches or heating them at high temperatures quickly, cause a process to occur. The process, Gelatinisation, cause your insulin to spike and can result in your skin breaking out.

5. Eat Healthy Fats

Healthy fats are your skin’s best friend. Omega 3 keeps your skin looking soft, supple and radiant. They can be found in certain fish such as salmon, avocado and nuts.

6. Eat Protein

Protein comes first! Eating your food in an order will keep your body from triggering the inflammation reaction. When eating your food, try and eat your proteins before the rest of the meal. Proteins do not stimulate insulin spikes. This will keep your body from spiking
because it is busy digesting the proteins.

7. Exercise.

Try and do at least 20 minutes of cardio each day. Exercise will get the blood pumping and will make sure that minerals and vitamins are moving to your skin cells and ensuring that your skin cells stay healthy and look vibrant. Exercise is also going to help keep your body in shape, healthy and reduces the risk of health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and other health problems.

Please keep in mind that even though sugar and processed food are a contributor to acne, ageing and other skin conditions, some people have these conditions because of genetics, hormones or other health issues.

We consume both good and bad sugars every day of our lives. By reducing the intake of bad sugars, your skin will start to look more alive and rejuvenated.

Beware: This Popular Drugstore Face Scrub Is Facing A Lawsuit!

Smooth summer skin

We all know that the key to a glowing complexion is to keep the skin exfoliated. Dry, dead skin cells cluttering up the surface of the skin  leave our complexions looking dull, drab, and uneven, and cause our makeup to look chunky and unflattering. They even cause blackheads and breakouts!

Now that  spring is here we are all thinking about exfoliating winter away and prepping our skin for the days of sunshine ahead. We need to smooth out the skin both on our faces and on our bodies too.

St Ives Apricot Scrub Lawsuit

One of the most well know exfoliators, St Ives Apricot Scrub, is facing a class action lawsuit. Claims state that the crushed walnut shells in the popular scrub actually cause microscopic tears in the skin, can damage the skin, and in fact state that the product is “unfit to be sold or used as a facial scrub”

Personally I am not a fan of facial scrubs, and if you have been reading this blog for a while you will have heard me say this already many times! I am a makeup artist, not a scientist or dermatologist, so anything I say is my opinion only, but my personal feeling is that scrubs are like coarse sandpaper on the face. Yes they may definitely scour off the dead cells like a brillo pad, but I am convinced they also scratch up the baby skin underneath, creating a perpetual cycle of rough skin.

If you have been using St Ives Apricot Scrub you may want to do a little research on the lawsuit, and get some more information on what they claim the product does to your skin. In the mean time lets look at some other options you can use to clear away the dead cells and get the glowing complexion that you deserve.

My favorite facial exfoliators are enzyme masks and enzyme products. The enzymes act like pac man on your face, eating away the dead cells and leaving you with the most gorgeous, glowing skin. The mostly are made up of fruit enzymes, and are a lovely, refreshing way to find your new skin.

I have a variety of them in my bathroom cabinet. My most recent is Tatcha’s Gentle Rice Enzyme Powder.  A full sized jar of it was in my Spring 2017 Zoe Report Box Of Style. I had forgotten how much I love this product! I is so gentle, yet gives you sensational results.

From Memebox, my favorite supplier of magical Korean skin care I buy peeling gels. I don’t have a specific favorite, just whatever they have in stock for my skin type. In all the years that I have been using Korean Skin Care I have not had one product from Memebox that I haven’t totally loved. (and everything they sell is incredibly affordable!)

For Body Exfoliating I don’t mind using scrubs. In the past I went through spells of making my own, but now I always seem to buy them.

There’s something a little bit luxurious about opening up a jar of Body Scrub that someone else has made!

Tatcha Polished Gentle Rice Enzyme Powder

Tatcha gentle Rice Enzyme Powder

This is quite possibly the very best enzyme product ever. Tatcha’s Polished Gentle Rice Enzyme Powder

I hadn’t used this one in a while but a full sized jar was in my Spring 2017 Zoe Report Box Of Style, so I got to fall in love with it all over again!

I am really not a fan of facial scrub style exfoliators. The way I see it although scrubs scour away the top layer of skin (like a brillo pad), they also rough up the baby skin underneath, so you can wind up in an endless cycle of rough skin.

Tatcha gentle Rice Enzyme Powder

Enzyme exfoliators like the Gentle Rice Enzyme Powder from Tatcha act like pac-man on the surface of the skin, eating away the dead cells on the surface and leaving the baby skin underneath soft and supple and glowing.

This one is so easy to use too. You simply wet your face and hands, pour about a teaspoon full (from the little spout in the jar) into your hands and gently work it into your skin. It’s not rough or gritty, and when it activates with water it has a slightly fizzy, foamy feel to it.

It’s the perfect spring-cleaning product for your skin, ridding your complexion of winter’s detritus and leaving you fresh faced and gorgeous!

Gentle Rice Enzyme Powder is ideal for normal to dry skins.

I’m also excited because Tatcha is releasing a water cream soon! Water creams are fabulous lightweight, oil free moisturizers that super-boost your skin’s hydration. Tatcha Water Cream is nutrient rich, and full of anti aging Japanese super-foods. I can’t wait for it to come out.
