What You Need To Know About Sugar And Your Skin

Sometimes you can be doing all the right things – you’re using the right cleanser, doing the right mask every week, using all the right skin care products, yet still your complexion is looking dull, or you are getting breakouts, and it just doesn’t make sense.

Maybe the culprit is not something topical, but instead is something you are eating.

Today’s post is actually from a guest blogger. Sally Mitchell of Lumeskin.com  very kindly wrote me a post about what eating sugar does to your skin. She has also put in some remedies to help you  do some repair-work. At the end of the post I have put links to some other very interesting posts she has written for her own website, Lumeskin.com

What You Need To Know About Sugar And Your Skin

We all know how bad sugar is for the body and what it does to the waistline, but did you know that sugar is also bad  for the skin?

When you consume sugar, the body breaks down the carbohydrates into glucose. This causes your insulin levels to spike which leads to a burst of inflammation throughout the body.

Inflammation in the body causes the body to produce enzymes that break down collagen and elastin. We need collagen and elastin to keep our skin plumped and prevent sagging. Too much sugar in our diets leads to the body breaking down these enzymes and our skin begins to sag, fine lines and wrinkles begin to form and our skin loses it’s elasticity. The more sugar you consume, the more likely it is that you will develop insulin resistance or diabetes, which can manifest as excess hair growth and dark patches on the neck and body creases.
People who have a high sugar diet will notice that they often suffer with acne like breakouts on their skin that never seems to go away completely even with acne skincare products.

What sugars should you not eat?

Simple carbohydrates are your skin’s worst enemy! Simple carbs break down into glucose and result in insulin spikes in your body.

Some common simple carbohydrates include:

• White bread

• Candy or sweets
• Fried foods
• Ice cream
• Fruit juice
• Pasta
• Condiments
• Ketchup
• Jams and jellies
• White and brown sugar
• Sodas
• Packaged snacks

What sugars should you eat?

Complex carbohydrates are broken down into glucose at a much slower rate. This means that they will not spike your insulin levels and cause inflammation in the body and skin.

• Beans
• Nuts
• Whole grain foods

• High fiber foods
• Olive oil
• Avocados
• Green vegetables
• Berries
• salmon

These food items are filled with anti-oxidants which will help your skin fight off free radicals as well healthy fats which will help your skin hydrated and keep your skin looking plump and youthful.

Tricks to counteract the sugar effects on your skin

Every action in the body has a re-action. There are ways that you can help your body deal with the unwanted sugars which will result in better looking skin.

1. Sleep

Make sure that you are getting enough sleep. When you do not get enough sleep, your body produces a stress hormone called Cortisol. This hormone can cause your insulin levels to spike.

2. Stress

Stress is a silent killer. Try to keep your stress levels as low as possible because stress can cause your insulin levels to spike just as much as sugar can. Find ways to deal with your stress levels such as meditating, doing yoga, or getting exercise.

3. Diet

Eating a balanced diet is one of the most important things that you can do to keep your body and skin looking young and healthy.

Make sure you are eating enough fresh foods as well as drinking at least a liter of water a day. A good water intake will ensure that your body stays hydrated and will help your body eliminate unwanted toxins that affect your body and the appearance of your skin.

4. Fast Food.

Cut back on (or eliminate!) fast food. Fast food can cause your insulin levels to spike because of the way that it is prepared. Frying food such as starches or heating them at high temperatures quickly, cause a process to occur. The process, Gelatinisation, cause your insulin to spike and can result in your skin breaking out.

5. Eat Healthy Fats

Healthy fats are your skin’s best friend. Omega 3 keeps your skin looking soft, supple and radiant. They can be found in certain fish such as salmon, avocado and nuts.

6. Eat Protein

Protein comes first! Eating your food in an order will keep your body from triggering the inflammation reaction. When eating your food, try and eat your proteins before the rest of the meal. Proteins do not stimulate insulin spikes. This will keep your body from spiking
because it is busy digesting the proteins.

7. Exercise.

Try and do at least 20 minutes of cardio each day. Exercise will get the blood pumping and will make sure that minerals and vitamins are moving to your skin cells and ensuring that your skin cells stay healthy and look vibrant. Exercise is also going to help keep your body in shape, healthy and reduces the risk of health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and other health problems.

Please keep in mind that even though sugar and processed food are a contributor to acne, ageing and other skin conditions, some people have these conditions because of genetics, hormones or other health issues.

We consume both good and bad sugars every day of our lives. By reducing the intake of bad sugars, your skin will start to look more alive and rejuvenated.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid And Does It Help Your Skin?

I am skin care obsessed.

If you want your makeup to look gorgeous you have to first focus on the skin underneath, making sure it is hydrated and glowing. When I am working, regardless of whether I’m doing a magazine shoot or prepping a celebrity for an on-camera appearance (or anything in between), the first step is to prep the skin. On most skins I will use a serum containing hyaluronic acid to super-boost the complexion’s hydration equation. When the complexion is beautifully hydrated foundation glides on easily and stays looking gorgeous much longer.

On myself I like to use a serum containing hyaluronic acid both morning and night to both plump up my skin and keep it hydrated.

ThankYourSkin.com has this fabulous info-graphic which explains hyaluronic acid beautifully. If you haven’t been to their website before, it is a fabulous resource for skin care info.

At the bottom of this post I have a group of serums containing hyaluronic acid that you can find at Sephora.

Enjoy!

Summer Makeup Tips

Have you noticed that in summer your makeup doesn’t look quite so good?

Maybe your foundation looks super slimy or maybe it looks too dry, your eye shadow turns into greasy pools in the creases of your eyelids, nothing stays where its supposed to, and you look nothing like the fresh faced models in the magazines?

The picture I have used here is from my Summer Beauty editorial for Luca Magazine. There are definitely tricks to looking fabulous in the summer, so I am sharing some of my favorite ones with you.

Here are 6 Summer Makeup Tips

1. Less is absolutely more in the summer.

The biggest mistake you can make is piling on too much makeup. Summer is all about looking fresh faced and healthy, which doesn’t work when you’re wearing mask-like makeup.
Aim for a gorgeous complexion. Start with a lighter weight moisturizer, next apply a dry finish facial SPF, and finally a really good primer to even out the texture of your skin.
If you need some help evening out your color, opt for a BB cream rather than a foundation.

2. Down play your eyes.

Big smokey, bold eye makeup looks stupid in the summer time. Choose a lighter, more nude look, and accent it with loads of mascara. To avoid smudgy mascara use a water resistant formula, and only ever use waterproof mascara if you’re planning on swimming or sobbing – waterproofs are so damaging to your lashes and can be difficult to remove.

3. Go easy on the bronzer.

Find a formulation that works with both your skin and your climate (pressed powder/cream/liquid), and then apply it where the sun would kiss your face if you were out and about all afternoon.
Bronzer does not take the place of blush, and regardless of what the you tubers tell you, it is not for contouring with.
Don’t make the mistake of trying to color your face in with bronzer – you will look muddy, not tanned. My favorite bronzer for the past few years has been Stila’s Aqua Glow Perfecting Bronzer. It’s a gel formulation that you can use to warm up a foundation (I cheat my way into fall…) or you can use it before or after foundation. I like wearing it on it’s own without foundation too. I never find it in stores, so I order it online. I have one in my pro makeup kit, one in my personal makeup stash, and one in my travel makeup kit.

4. Accent your brows.

Use your brows to add a little structure and polish to your look.
Without going overboard, (as in don’t do the brows you see all over Instagram) give your brows a little definition and a hint of color with a waterproof/water resistant brow product. It will frame your eyes and keep your look nicely balanced.

5. Focus on the lip.

Add a pop of color to your look with a bright summer lip. If your overall look is glowy try wearing a bold matte lip. If your skin is looking a little dry, liven your look up with a fun colorful gloss. For a bright, warm pink try Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips in Electric Poppy

6. A little highlight goes a long way.

If you are transitioning from day to night, or if your look feels a little flat, adding a tiny amount of highlight to your upper cheek bones, under the eye if your eyes look tired, maybe a hint to the bridge of your nose if you need it, can lighten and brighten your complexion.
Just don’t overdo it. There’s a big difference between brightening your look and making yourself look glittery-shiny. My favorite highlighter is Charlotte Tilbury’s Bar Of Gold. You can use it to add dimension to eyes, lips, cheeks. It has warmth and glows instead of sparkles. It’s fabulous.
