Beautiful Parisian Floors

A lifetime ago when I was living in London I had to make a life altering career decision.

I had to either move to Paris or to New York.

At the time Paris was my absolute favorite city in the world and I held this naive fear that if I moved there it would just become the place I lived, and would forever lose its magic. What a fool – Paris will always be Paris!

I chose New York, wound up in Los Angeles, and life moved on. I often wonder what would have happened if my decision had gone the other way. Where would I be now? Would I be living in Le Marais? St Cloud? The 15th? Would I be married to a Frenchman? Would I have ended up in America anyway?

I always think about it when I’m in Paris. I was just there a few weeks ago and it felt as if with every magnificent corner that I turned  the city was looking back at me saying ” Yes, but you didn’t choose me…”

I am obsessed with travel blogs and travel Instagram accounts. I scour them at every opportunity. I’m always looking for new or quirky things to do in the cities I travel to, something interesting from another traveler’s perspective. Travel guides can get boring and repetitive, but bloggers and Instagrammers have so many fascinating things to share, different, intriguing takes on places, with fabulous visual cues.

I study their work and then make endless lists of cool things to see and do, especially in the places I’m traveling to, but also the places on my bucket list. When I’m away and I manage to get a little free time I try to fill it with these new experiences.

Parisian Floors, Sebastian Erras

One Instagram that I absolutely love is photographer Sebastian Erras’ beautiful @parisianfloors. He posts pictures of exquisite (and wickedly cool) mosaic floors around Paris, normally including his feet in super stylish shoes.

His Instagram page is just fabulous. Every time I look at it I ache to get back to Paris and track down all these wonderful places.

On my phone I have a list of about 40 of his floors in Paris that I want to see and photograph myself.

This past trip I was tour guiding one of my Glam Italia Tours. (This one was 6 days in Paris, 6 on the Italian Riviera and 2 in Florence) In free moments, and where possible for coffee breaks with the group, I tried to stop at places on my Sebastian Erras list.

If not for Sebastian’s Instagram I wouldn’t have known to go inside and look at the floor at Cafe Benjamin.

I may have chosen a different place to stop for coffee, but I got such a kick out of going to a place on my Sebastian Erras/Parisian floors list!

I thought about trying to do shoe pics like he does, but his shoes and his vision are what brings his stories to life.   So I abandoned that idea.

I only got to a few of Sebastian’s cafes, and didn’t get to the other places on my list, but that just means I need to get back to Paris sooner rather than later. Because after all, Paris is always a good idea…

I flew to Paris from Los Angeles on Air France and it was fabulous. I’m not sponsored by Air France and my flight wasn’t free – I paid for it. The flight was fabulous. The seats were comfortable, the in-flight entertainment was great, the food was good, the service was just wonderful.

I used to fly Air France from Los Angeles to Paris all the time, I need to fly them more often.

I always travel with travel insurance. If I were to get sick and not be able to travel it would cover me and I wouldn’t lose the money I had laid out for my trip. Travel Insurance also covers you for missed flight connections, luggage that doesn’t arrive, and super importantly it covers you if something goes wrong medically while you are away. I always buy a policy that gives me $50,000 coverage to fly home with a nurse if something bad were to happen. But allowing for the cost of medical care here in the USA I would be better off staying there…

I use Allianz Travel Insurance and have done for years.

One Of The Best Views In Paris

I love seeing beautiful cities from up high. Paris is one of those cities that you need to learn by walking endlessly, but you also need to see it across the rooftops.

Normally I like to go to the rooftop cafe at Printemps and look out over Paris with a cafe au lait or a sancerre, depending on the time of day, but this time I got to Printemps and the roof cafe was closed. I think they told me it would be closed for 2 years, but my French sadly is not what it used to be, so who knows?

Anyway, I decided to take another elevated option, one I hadn’t done before, and go up to the top of the Pantheon.

Truth be told I had never been to the Pantheon in Paris before. Even though I have been to Paris about a million times. The Pantheon is in my favorite part of town, the left bank.

Paris Street

A gorgeous amble up Rue St Jacques or Rue des Carmes onto Rue Valette, past flower shops and coffee shops, beautiful Parisian streets that keep you dawdling forever, and you’re there.

Pantheon Paris

The Pantheon is a neo classical building modeled on the Pantheon in Rome. It is well worth visiting in and of itself, but for an extra €12 you can climb 206 stairs to the roof and one of the most fabulous panoramic views of this endlessly gorgeous city.

There are a couple of points to stop at along the way, so you don’t have to do it all in one go.

I don’t know if I lucked out with a low tourist day or if it’s just not a huge draw, but it was delightfully empty when I was there. No lines, no crowds, not even 50 people inside.

Next time you are in Paris, take the time to go to the Pantheon. You won’t be disappointed.

Air France

I flew Air France from Los Angeles to Paris. I used to fly them all the time, and I had forgotten what a wonderful airline they are! I was upgraded to Premium Economy and really had a tremendous experience. Air France doesn’t sponsor this blog and I paid for my flight – they didn’t give it to me.

The flight attendants looked so stunning and put together throughout the flight, the food was great, the plane was in good shape. I will fly them again for sure.

Shakespeare and Company ~ A Literary Must See In Paris

I love Paris.

I love Paris any time of year, but especially on a sunny late-spring day. This year my first Glam Italia Tour actually started in Paris. I had forgotten just how much I love this amazing city!

I flew Air France from Los Angeles, and as always was really impressed with the service. How do their flight attendants always look so glamorous??

Shakespeare and Company Paris

One of the first stops I always make in Paris is at Shakespeare and Company, one of the most unique and infamous bookstores in the world.

Shakespeare and Company Paris

Since 1951, Shakespeare and Company has inhabited some of the most prime real estate in all of Paris. It takes up a half block of the Latin Quarter on Rue de la Bucherie, across from the Seine, a stone’s throw from Notre Dame.

The bookstore is legendary. Writers have gathered there since the beginning, and it has been described as the focal point of literary culture in bohemian Paris.

Cots for aspiring writers, in among the books

Cots are secreted away between bookshelves and aspiring writers are invited to sleep for free in exchange for helping out around the store. They are supposed to read a book per day and leave a one page autobiography for the store’s archives.

What I have always loved about Shakespeare’s is that it invites you to take your time, wander around, pick up books and look through them.

The shop is owned by a human, not a conglomerate, no marketing department has laid the experience out for you, it is as organic of a literary experience as you can get.

There are both new and used books at Shakespeare’s, so everyone can get books.

The books are in English, and I like to drop in at the beginning of my trip and stock up on my holiday reading.

I had time up my sleeve this time, so I bought some books and then wandered next door to the Shakespeare and Company cafe, and sat outside in the sunshine with a cafe au lait and my new Jonathan Kellerman.
